To coordinate and organize women of Bougainville to strive for better education, living conditions, business opportunities in a pursuit to improve their lives and alleviate poverty at all levels of society.
The Arawa Women’s Training Centre (AWTC) has been in existence since 2001 to assist women and girls who had been disadvantaged by the Bougainville Crisis to gain some form of counseling, skills and capacity building so they can restart their lives. It is managed by a Board which comprises of the Council of Elders, Churches, Landowners, Women in Business and the Administration.
The centre is now reviewing its programs in line with the needs of women. Long term courses have been stopped and the focus is now on short courses supporting local businesses and community initiatives. The programs have however, not only benefited the Kieta women but women from other Districts as well.
The AWTC is now initiating, coordinating and facilitating knowledge and skills training programs for men, women and girls and other interested stake holders on Bougainville in the areas of developmental activities and especially business entrepreneurial activities, political development and public awareness programs, etc, for the communities at large.
The Arawa Women’s Training Centre has re-aligned its courses to prepare men, women and girls and other stakeholders to be active players in the ever changing environment of Bougainville.
Some of the courses that are being offered at the Arawa Women’s Training Centre are Catering, Tailoring, Tourism & Hospitality, Trainer for trainers, Proposal writing, Leadership course, Viability program, Good Governance, Domestic Violence, Voter Education, Primary Health Care, Basic Agriculture, Beautification, Hair Dressing & Message, Finance Management, Day Care & Nurseries, etc.
The Arawa Women’s Training Centre was itself a project funded by the UNDP in 2001.
It was established and developed for the District Council of Women of Kieta on what use be the former Provincial Government Administration building and the PNGBC building which the centre is now using to conduct its trainings.
Today it is a success story for the women.
Over the years however, time and the environment has changed and so the need for immediate reforms hence, a change in policy approach for socioeconomic and political developments in the Autonomous
Region of Bougainville.
In 2012 A Ten Year Business and Institutional Development Plan was developed as a result of the Arawa Women’s Council’s decision to strategize and plan for the next decade.
The reform is an endeavor to grow and develop the subsidiary entities namely (1) Arawa Women’s Lodge, (2) Arawa Women’s Conference Centre, (3) Arawa Women’s Business Development Centre, (4) Arawa Women’s Training Centre, (5) Arawa Women’s Entertainment Centre,(6) Arawa Women’s Savings & Loan society, (7) Arawa Women’s Fresh Food Cooperative Society, and (8) Arawa Women’s Sports & Recreation Centre of the Arawa Women’s Council (AWC) under separate management and leadership.
The Council has been restructured to accommodate changes in the development process of Bougainville. This reform process was requested by the Council as a way forward to assist the women of Bougainville to participate meaningfully in all sectors of development as a means to improve their livelihood and to alleviate poverty.
The Arawa Women’s Training Centre is managed by a Board known as the Arawa Women’s Council (AWC) which comprises of the Council of Elders, Churches, Landowners, Women in Business and the Administration. The Board is the overall body that governs all the activities of the Centre chaired by the chairperson, t he vice- chairperson and its members.
The Arawa Women’s Council anticipates focusing much of its attention and energy to human resource development over the coming years as a means of strengthening the organization and simultaneously empowering the women to actively participate in small business developments.
